Judith B. Bachant
Judith B. Bachant worked on expert configuration systems at Digital Equipment Corporation. With John McDermott she published the 1984 R1 retrospective, examining how a VAX configuration knowledge base grew after production use began in 1980. The paper describes knowledge acquisition, validation, rule encoding and the wider manufacturing checks around the system. AAAI elected Bachant a Fellow in 1993 for engineering accomplishments in embedding expert configuration systems in Digital’s business processes.
Timeline
-
1980 production context
R1 in computer manufacturing
Digital Equipment Corporation used R1 regularly from January 1980. The system configured VAX computers from purchase orders, checking missing or inconsistent components.

1984
A shared account of knowledge engineering
Bachant co-authored R1 Revisited: Four Years in the Trenches with McDermott in 1984. She worked in Digital’s Intelligent Systems Technology Group. The work was divided between acquiring and validating technical knowledge and encoding that knowledge in rules. Company and university contributors shared the work.

Maintaining a changing expert system
The knowledge base grew in component descriptions and supported computer families. A changing product domain requires continuing development, and system performance must be understood within a manufacturing process with additional checks.

1993
Recognition for engineering integration
AAAI elected Bachant a Fellow in 1993. AAAI recognized her engineering work embedding expert configuration systems in Digital’s business processes.
