Joshua Knowles
Also known as J D Knowles, J Knowles, J. D. Knowles, J. Knowles, J.D. Knowles, Joshua D. Knowles
Joshua Knowles is a computer scientist whose research focuses on multiobjective optimization. With David Corne, he wrote a paper on the Pareto Archived Evolution Strategy, and he published ParEGO, a hybrid method for expensive optimization. His career includes research fellowships, a Birmingham professorship, work on energy trading, and a 2025 paper applying deep optimization to job scheduling. As of October 2026, he is a Principal Scientist at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and an IEEE Fellow.

Timeline
-
1993–2002
Reading and the PAES algorithm
He earns a physics degree in 1993, an MSc in information systems engineering in 1996, and a computer-science PhD in 2002 at Reading. His research focuses on multiobjective optimization; with David Corne, he publishes a 2000 paper on the Pareto Archived Evolution Strategy.
-
2001–2008
Research fellowships
He holds a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship from 2001 to 2003 and a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship from 2002 to 2008.
-
2006–2008
ParEGO and an IEEE award
He publishes ParEGO, a hybrid algorithm for expensive multiobjective optimization, in 2006; IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation gives the paper its Outstanding Paper Award in 2008.
-
2015
Professor at Birmingham
He accepts a professorship in computational intelligence for software engineering at the University of Birmingham in February 2015.
-
2017
A SIGEVO Impact Award
He and David Corne receive the 2017 ACM SIGEVO Impact Award for their 2007 paper on many-objective optimization.
-
2020–2025
Energy trading and scheduling
At Invenia Labs from 2020 to 2022, he works on energy trading algorithms to reduce spikes and congestion on the US electricity grid. In 2025, he coauthors a GECCO paper that explores Deep Optimization for single-stage job scheduling.
-
2026
An IEEE Fellowship
IEEE names him a 2026 Fellow of the Computational Intelligence Society for contributions to multiobjective optimization.
-
Since 2022
Principal Scientist at SLB
Since 2022, he is a Principal Scientist at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and works in its AI group on algorithms to support the energy transition.
