Researcher

Jonas Peters

Jonas Peters studied mathematics at Heidelberg and Cambridge, then built a research program that connects causal inference with machine learning. He coauthored the 2012 ICML paper On Causal and Anticausal Learning and the 2017 book Elements of Causal Inference with Dominik Janzing and Bernhard Schölkopf. His career included doctoral and postdoctoral work at ETH Zurich, group leadership at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, and professorships at the University of Copenhagen and ETH Zurich. He shared the 2022 ICML Test of Time Honorable Mention and the 2026 Frontiers of Science Award with collaborators. He has been a professor of statistics at ETH Zurich since April 2023 and is an ELLIS Scholar in its Zurich unit as of October 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2006–2007

    Mathematics at Heidelberg and Cambridge

He studies mathematics with a physics minor at the University of Heidelberg and completes Cambridge's Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics by 2007.

  2. 2012

    On Causal and Anticausal Learning

In 2012, he coauthors the ICML paper On Causal and Anticausal Learning. The paper studies function estimation when a causal model can be inferred and relates the problem to covariate shift, concept drift, transfer learning and semi-supervised learning.

  3. 2012–2015

Doctoral and postdoc work at ETH

From 2012 to 2015, he pursues PhD and postdoctoral work with Peter Bühlmann at ETH Zurich.

  4. By 2016

    Group leader at MPI-IS

After his postdoctoral stay at ETH Zurich, he becomes a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. In 2016, he moves to the University of Copenhagen.

  5. 2016–2019

Copenhagen professorship and a causal book

He joins the University of Copenhagen as an associate professor of statistics in 2016. With Dominik Janzing and Bernhard Schölkopf, he publishes Elements of Causal Inference in 2017, a concise introduction to causal models and learning from data. He becomes a full professor of statistics in 2019.

  6. 2022

    ICML Test of Time mention

In 2022, On Causal and Anticausal Learning receives an ICML Test of Time Honorable Mention.

  7. 2026

    The Frontiers of Science Award

In 2026, he shares the Frontiers of Science Award with Dominik Rothenhäusler, Nicolai Meinshausen and Peter Bühlmann for their work Anchor regression: Heterogeneous data meet causality.

  8. Since April 2023

    Professor at ETH Zurich

He takes up a full professorship in statistics at ETH Zurich in April 2023. As of October 2026, he remains a professor there and is an ELLIS Scholar in the Zurich unit. His research covers causal inference, machine learning, and statistical methods robust to distribution shifts.
