John S. Gero
John S. Gero studies computational design, including knowledge-based systems, creative design models and methods for studying designers. Gero edited a 1985 volume on knowledge engineering in computer-aided design and a 1987 volume on expert systems in that field. His research includes computational models of design and visual representation. J. W. T. Kan and Gero published a book on quantitative methods for studying design protocols. His research covers protocol studies, design ontologies, situated agents and computational models of creativity.
Timeline
-
1985–1987
Knowledge and expert systems in design
Gero edited a 1985 volume on knowledge engineering in computer-aided design and a 1987 volume on expert systems in that field. His research includes computational models of design and visual representation.
-
1990–1993
Design systems and creativity
Gero coauthored Knowledge-Based Design Systems with R. D. Coyne, M. A. Rosenman, A. D. Radford and M. B. Balachandran in 1990. With M. L. Maher, he edited a 1993 volume on modeling creativity and knowledge-based creative design.
-
2004–2008
Design computing and cognition
He edited the 2004 Design Computing and Cognition volume and coedited the 2008 volume with A. Goel. The volumes connect computational design with studies of cognition.
-
2017
Methods for studying design protocols
J. W. T. Kan and Gero published a book on quantitative methods for studying design protocols. He studies design protocols, design ontologies, situated agents and computational models of creativity.
