John M. Vlissides
Also known as J. M. Vlissides, J. Vlissides, J.M. Vlissides, John Vlissides
John Vlissides was a software researcher whose design-pattern work now informs AI engineering: a 2023 study cites his 1994 book and identifies traditional patterns adapted for AI-based systems. He earned electrical-engineering degrees at Virginia and Stanford, co-developed the InterViews toolkit, and joined IBM Research in 1991. With Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, and Ralph Johnson, he coauthored Design Patterns in 1994 and published Pattern Hatching in 1998. IBM recognized him with an achievement award in 1996 and membership in its Academy of Technology in 1998; ACM SIGPLAN gave the four Design Patterns authors its Programming Languages Achievement Award in 2005. He died at 44 in 2005.

Timeline
-
1983–1990
Education and InterViews
He earns a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia in 1983, a master's degree from Stanford in 1985, and a doctorate there in 1990. At Stanford, he co-develops InterViews, a set of libraries and tools for graphical applications.
-
1991–2005
Research at IBM
He joins IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in 1991 as a research staff member and studies user interface development tools, programming environments, and object-oriented system architecture, programming, and visualization.
-
1994
Design Patterns
With Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, and Ralph Johnson, he coauthors Design Patterns, a book about software patterns published in 1994.
-
1996–1998
IBM technical honors
He receives IBM's Outstanding Technical Achievement Award in 1996 and is elected to the IBM Academy of Technology in 1998.
-
1998
Pattern Hatching
He publishes Pattern Hatching: Design Patterns Applied in 1998; the book offers practical techniques for applying design patterns.
-
2005
A programming languages award
He shares the 2005 ACM SIGPLAN Programming Languages Achievement Award with Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, and Ralph Johnson. He dies at 44 in 2005.
-
2023
Patterns adapted for AI
In 2023, researchers cite his 1994 book to define reusable design patterns and identify 36 traditional patterns adapted to AI-based systems.
