Johann Borenstein
Johann Borenstein is a robotics researcher who developed methods for mobile-robot obstacle avoidance and mapping. He earned three mechanical engineering degrees at the Technion and co-developed robot-navigation methods with Yoram Koren. His work included assistive guidance, the OmniTread robot, personal dead-reckoning, and indoor tracking for tele-operated robots. As of October 2026, he is affiliated with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Timeline
-
1981–1987
Mechanical engineering at Technion
He earns a B.Sc. in 1981, an M.Sc. in 1983, and a D.Sc. in mechanical engineering in 1987 at the Technion.
-
1989
The virtual force field
In 1989, he publishes a virtual force field method for real-time mobile-robot obstacle avoidance. It combines certainty grids for obstacle representation with potential fields for navigation.
-
1991
Histogramic in-motion mapping
He and Yoram Koren introduce HIMM in 1991; it builds real-time maps from range-sensor readings while a mobile robot moves.
-
1997–1998
The GuideCane and award
He and Iwan Ulrich develop a sonar cane in 1997 that steers its user around obstacles. In 1998, Borenstein wins Discover magazine's robotics award for the GuideCane, a robotic walking stick for blind pedestrians.
-
2005
The OmniTread serpentine robot
In 2005, his Mobile Robotics Lab develops the OmniTread serpentine robot for rough terrain. Borenstein leads the lab as a research professor and coauthors an article about the robot's use for radiation surveillance.
-
2010–2011
Heading-error removal system
The University of Michigan files his heading-error removal application in 2010 and publishes it in 2011. It targets drift in tracking devices, including personal dead-reckoning systems.
-
2012
TeleOpTrak location tracking
He, Russ Miller, and Adam Borrell publish TelOpTrak in 2012, a study of indoor location tracking for tele-operated robots.
-
As of October 2026
University of Michigan affiliation
As of October 2026, he is affiliated with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
