Johan De Kleer
Johan De Kleer researches qualitative reasoning, assumption-based truth maintenance and model-based diagnosis. He earned an MIT AI doctorate and held research and management roles at PARC. With John Seely Brown he published qualitative-physics work in 1984. His 1986 ATMS papers address reasoning under assumptions, and his 1987 diagnostic paper with Brian C. Williams addresses multiple faults. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 1990. He later researched design and resilient systems.

Education and PARC career
Reasoning about engineered systems
De Kleer earned an MIT AI doctorate and held research and laboratory-management roles at PARC. His research covers model-based diagnosis, design and resilient systems.
-
1984
Qualitative models of physical behavior
With John Seely Brown, De Kleer published A Qualitative Physics Based on Confluences in 1984. His work includes this paper and related research on circuits. Their work represents physical behavior for automated reasoning.
-
1986–1987
Assumptions and multiple faults
De Kleer published papers on assumption-based truth maintenance and problem solving with the ATMS in 1986. He also co-authored Diagnosing Multiple Faults with Brian C. Williams in 1987. The ATMS maintains reasoning under assumptions, and the diagnostic paper addresses system diagnosis.

1990 and 2024
Recognition and continuing research
AAAI elected De Kleer a Fellow in 1990. As of February 2024, De Kleer worked on model-based diagnosis, resilient systems and design, and was a co-founder and chief scientist at c-infinity.
