Researcher

Joan Bresnan

Joan Bresnan is a linguist whose work on Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) connects formal grammar with computational linguistics. She earned a philosophy BA at Reed College in 1966 and a linguistics PhD at MIT in 1972. Before joining Stanford in 1983, she held faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and MIT, then worked at Xerox PARC's Intelligent Systems Laboratory from 1983 to 1992. She was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy in 2015 and received the ACL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for work on LFG and syntax. Until 2025 she was a senior researcher at Stanford's Spoken Syntax Lab; as of October 2026, she is Sadie Dernham Patek Professor Emerita in Humanities at Stanford.

Timeline

  1. 1966–1972

    From philosophy to linguistics

She earned a BA in philosophy from Reed College in 1966 and a PhD in linguistics from MIT in 1972.

  2. 1982

    A formal grammar for language

She helped design and develop Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), a formal grammar system with computational implementations. In 1982, she edited The Mental Representation of Grammatical Relations.

  3. 1983

    Joining Stanford

Before joining Stanford's Department of Linguistics in 1983, she held faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and MIT.

  5. 2015

    A British Academy fellowship

She was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy in 2015.

  6. 2016

    An award for computational linguistics

She received the ACL's 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work on Lexical-Functional Grammar, syntax, and formal description of language contributed to computational linguistics.

  7. By 2025

Work at the Spoken Syntax Lab

Until 2025, she was a senior researcher at the Spoken Syntax Lab in Stanford's Center for the Study of Language and Information.
