Researcher

Jianying Hu

Jianying Hu is an IBM Fellow whose research spans pattern recognition, image classification, and AI for healthcare. She studied electrical engineering at Tsinghua and earned a doctorate at Stony Brook before working at Bell Labs and Avaya; she joined IBM in 2003. Her 2004 paper classified web images, and IAPR, the IEEE Computer Society, and IBM named her a Fellow. Later work links biomedical foundation models with drug discovery and multi-omics research. As of October 2026, she is IBM's Director of Healthcare and Life Sciences Research and Global Science Leader of AI for Health.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1993

    Electrical engineering at Tsinghua

She studies electrical engineering at Tsinghua University from 1984 to 1988 and receives a PhD from Stony Brook University in 1993.

  2. 1993–2003

    From Bell Labs to IBM

She begins her career at Bell Labs in 1993, transfers to Avaya Labs Research in 2000, and joins IBM as a Research Staff Member in 2003.

  3. 2004

    Classifying web images

She coauthors the 2004 paper “Categorizing Images in Web Documents” with Amit Bagga. Its experiments compare linear and radial-basis-function kernels in Support Vector Machine classifiers for web-image categorization.

  4. 2010

    An IAPR fellowship

IAPR names her a Fellow in 2010 for contributions to pattern recognition methods, applications, and service to the association.

  5. 2015–2018

    IEEE and IBM fellowships

The IEEE Computer Society lists her among the members elevated to Fellow in 2015; IBM's 2018 Fellows directory includes her.

  6. 2021–2023

An ACMI fellowship and NASEM service

She becomes an ACMI Fellow in 2021 and serves on the NASEM committee on a framework for emerging science, technology, and innovation in health from 2022 to 2023.

  7. 2024–2025

    Biomedical models for discovery

IBM Research opens two biomedical foundation models for drug discovery in 2024; Hu says they could speed scientific discovery. She coauthors a June 2025 AI x Bio poster on agentic AI systems that use multi-omics foundation models for biomedical discovery.

  8. As of October 2026

    AI for Health at IBM

As of October 2026, she is IBM's Director of Healthcare and Life Sciences Research and Global Science Leader of AI for Health.
