Researcher

Jerry M. Chow

Jerry Chow is an IBM quantum-computing researcher whose work spans machine learning and hybrid computing with AI resources. He grew up in New York, studied physics at Harvard and Yale, and joined IBM Research in 2010. He co-authored a 2015 paper on quantum advantage in machine learning and helped launch cloud access to IBM’s quantum processor in 2016. The American Physical Society elected him a Fellow in 2021, and IBM named him an IBM Fellow in 2022. In November 2025, he outlined a networked quantum-computing roadmap; as of October 2026, he is IBM’s CTO for Quantum-Centric Supercomputing.

Timeline

  1. By 2010

    From Harvard to IBM

Growing up in New York, he develops an interest in physics and engineering. At Harvard, he works as a student researcher in Charles Marcus’ lab and completes a Yale doctorate in 2010. In 2010, he joins IBM’s Watson Research Center to study quantum computing.

  2. 2015

    Quantum advantage in machine learning

In 2015, he co-authors “Demonstration of quantum advantage in machine learning,” which uses a five-qubit superconducting processor to learn parity with noise and finds a large query-count advantage for quantum processing.

  3. 2016

    Launching IBM Quantum Experience

In 2016, he and Jay Gambetta co-lead the launch of IBM Quantum Experience, which places a quantum processor on the cloud for public experiments.

  4. 2021

    An APS Fellowship

In 2021, the American Physical Society elects him a Fellow for contributions to superconducting quantum computing and cloud-accessible devices.

  5. 2022

    An IBM Fellowship

In 2022, he becomes an IBM Fellow; his work on two-qubit gates, calibration, stability and integration helps move quantum computing into deployed systems.

  6. November 2025

    A quantum networking roadmap

In November 2025, he outlines quantum networking as a way to connect quantum processors and describes IBM’s roadmap toward circuits with one billion operations on 2,000 qubits by 2033.

  7. As of October 2026

    Leading quantum-centric supercomputing

As of October 2026, he is IBM’s CTO for Quantum-Centric Supercomputing; IBM’s hybrid compute framework brings quantum, AI, silicon and algorithms together.
