Jerry L. Prince

Also known as J L Prince, J PRINCE, J Prince, J. L. Prince, J. Prince

Jerry Prince is an electrical engineer whose computer-vision and image-processing work serves medical imaging. He earned degrees at the University of Connecticut and MIT, then joined Johns Hopkins faculty in 1989. His work includes gradient vector flow for active contours and HARP MRI for cardiac motion. He helped commercialize HARP through Diagnosoft and received the MICCAI Society Fellowship in 2011 and its Enduring Impact Award in 2012. As of October 2026, he is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins and coauthors a June 2026 paper on spatio-temporal diffusion for vocal tract MRI.

Timeline

  1. 1979–1988

Engineering degrees at UConn and MIT

He earns the B.S. degree at the University of Connecticut in 1979 and S.M., E.E., and Ph.D. degrees at MIT in 1982, 1986, and 1988, all in electrical engineering and computer science.

  2. 1982–1989

    Medical imaging and radar work

From 1982 to 1983, he develops instrumentation and reconstruction algorithms for ultrasonic medical imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital. In 1988, he joins TASC to help design an automated vision system for synthetic-aperture radar, then joins Johns Hopkins faculty in 1989.

  3. 1998

    Gradient vector flow

With Chenyang Xu, he publishes gradient vector flow (GVF) in 1998, an external force for active contours that helps them reach object-boundary concavities.

  4. 1999

    HARP MRI for cardiac motion

With Nael Osman, he coauthors a 1999 paper that introduces harmonic phase (HARP) MRI for rapid analysis of tagged cardiac magnetic resonance images and heart motion.

  5. 2002–2016

    Commercializing HARP through Diagnosoft

He co-founds Diagnosoft in 2002 as a cardiovascular MRI software company built on HARP. Diagnosoft ends in 2016, and Myocardial Solutions licenses HARP technology for the cardiovascular MRI market.

  6. 2011–2012

    A MICCAI fellowship and award

He becomes a MICCAI Society Fellow in 2011 for contributions to medical imaging and image analysis. In 2012, the society gives him the Enduring Impact Award.

  7. 2015

    UConn engineering academy

He joins UConn's Academy of Distinguished Engineers as a 2015 inductee.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Johns Hopkins

As of October 2026, he is the William B. Kouwenhoven Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins. His research covers image processing, computer vision, and machine learning for medical imaging. In June 2026, he coauthors a paper on spatio-temporal diffusion for vocal tract MRI.
