Jeffrey F. Cohn
Also known as Jeffrey Cohn, Jeff Cohn
Jeffrey Cohn is a psychologist and computer-vision researcher whose AI work applies facial analysis to emotion, pain, and mental health. He holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts and coauthored a 2000 paper that introduced a coded facial-expression database with Takeo Kanade and Ying-Li Tian. In 2023, he coauthored PyAFAR, a facial-action detector for adults and infants, and in 2024 he coauthored a paper on multimodal prediction of obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. He served as an honorary chair at ACII 2025, became a 2026 grant holder on the AURORA mental-health project, and delivered ICMI’s Sustained Accomplishment Award keynote in October 2026. As of October 2026, he is Professor Emeritus at Pittsburgh, Courtesy Faculty at Carnegie Mellon, and Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of Deliberate AI.

2000
A facial-expression database
He holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts. In 2000, with Takeo Kanade and Ying-Li Tian, he presents the CMU-Pittsburgh AU-Coded Face Expression Image Database, with 2,105 image sequences from 182 adults for comparative studies.
-
2014
Co-chairing ICMI
In 2014, he co-chairs ACM ICMI.
-
2023
The PyAFAR library
In 2023, he coauthors PyAFAR, an open-source Python library that detects facial action units in adults and infants and tracks facial landmarks and head pose.
-
2024
Multimodal psychiatric prediction
In 2024, he coauthors a paper on multimodal prediction of obsessive-compulsive disorder, comorbid depression, and deep-brain-stimulation energy.
-
2025
Honorary chair at ACII
At ACII 2025, he serves as an honorary chair, representing the University of Pittsburgh.
-
2026
The AURORA project
In 2026, he is a grantholder on AURORA, a generative-AI project for anxiety, depression, and psychosis that pairs passive sensing with conversational check-ins and multimodal signals.
-
October 2026
An ICMI award keynote
In October 2026, he gives ICMI’s Sustained Accomplishment Award keynote, “Forty Years of Research in Multimodal Interaction.”

As of October 2026
Professor emeritus and chief scientist
As of October 2026, he is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Intelligent Systems at the University of Pittsburgh, Courtesy Faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, and Chief Scientist and Co-Founder at Deliberate AI. He leads work on automatic analysis and synthesis of facial expression and prosody, and co-developed the Cohn-Kanade, UNBC Pain Archive, and BP4D databases.
