Jana Košecká
Also known as Jana Kosecka
Jana Košecká is a computer vision researcher whose work spans 3-D reconstruction, autonomous driving, sign-language access, and vision-language navigation. She studied electrical engineering and computer science in Bratislava, completed a PhD at Penn in 1996, and worked on computer vision for autonomous driving at Berkeley. She won the 1999 Marr Prize for a paper on Euclidean reconstruction and reprojection, and she coauthored An Invitation to 3-D Vision in 2004. At George Mason, she began computer-vision research on American Sign Language in 2019 and coauthored a 2025 navigation paper that uses large language and vision-language models. As of October 2026, she is a professor of computer science at George Mason University and one of the general chairs of ECCV 2026.

Timeline
-
1990s
From Slovakia to Berkeley
She earns bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science at Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, then completes a PhD at Penn in 1996. At Berkeley, she takes a postdoctoral position in autonomous driving, where her team builds a vision-based car that changes lanes and keeps a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
-
1999
An ICCV Marr Prize
She shares the 1999 ICCV Marr Prize with Yi Ma, Stefano Soatto, and S. Shankar Sastry for Euclidean Reconstruction and Reprojection up to Subgroups.
-
2004
An Invitation to 3-D Vision
She coauthors An Invitation to 3-D Vision: From Images to Geometric Models with Yi Ma, Stefano Soatto, and S. Shankar Sastry in 2004.
-
2019–February 2023
Computer vision for sign language
She begins studying computer vision for American Sign Language with Huzefa Rangwala and Parth Pathak in 2019; in February 2023, Amazon funds her work on systems that translate continuous American Sign Language into English.
-
October 2023
General Chair at ICCV
She serves as a general chair of ICCV in Paris in October 2023.
-
2025
TRAVEL for language navigation
In 2025, she coauthors TRAVEL, a zero-shot vision-language navigation method that uses large language and vision-language models to turn natural-language instructions into path hypotheses.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at George Mason
She is a professor of computer science at George Mason University and one of ECCV 2026's general chairs.
