Iryna Gurevych
Iryna Gurevych researches NLP and scientific text. She earned her doctorate in 2003 and became a Darmstadt full professor in 2009 after earlier research and group-leadership roles. With Nils Reimers she published Sentence-BERT in 2019. She became an ACL Fellow in 2020 and contributed to the shared BEIR retrieval benchmark in 2021. She received an InterText grant in 2022 and served as ACL president in 2023. InterText studies changing, interconnected documents and collaborative text work.

2003–2009
A language-research career at Darmstadt
Gurevych earned a Duisburg-Essen computational-linguistics doctorate in 2003. She began research service at Darmstadt in 2005, led an Emmy Noether group from 2007 to 2008, held a Lichtenberg appointment from 2008 to 2009 and became a full professor in 2009.

2019
Sentence-BERT
Gurevych and Nils Reimers published Sentence-BERT in 2019. The method produces sentence embeddings through paired and triplet network structures and compares them through cosine similarity. The method addresses similarity search and clustering.

2020–2021
Recognition and retrieval evaluation
ACL elected Gurevych a Fellow in 2020. She coauthored the 2021 BEIR benchmark with Nandan Thakur, Reimers, Andreas Rücklé and Abhishek Srivastava. The work provides a heterogeneous benchmark for evaluating information-retrieval models in zero-shot settings.BEIR is a shared evaluation resource.

2022–2023
Interconnected texts and professional leadership
Gurevych received an ERC Advanced Grant for InterText in 2022 and served as ACL president in 2023. Gurevych is InterText’s principal investigator; the program studies texts that change over time and connect to other documents. The program includes data, benchmarking and applications to collaborative text work.
