Researcher

Ingemar J. Cox

Also known as Ingemar Johansson Cox, Ingemar Cox

Ingemar Cox is a computer scientist whose research ranges across computer vision, image retrieval, digital watermarking, and machine learning. He studied at University College London and Oxford and worked on mobile robots at AT&T Bell Labs from 1984 to 1989. He joined NEC in 1989, created its computer vision group, served as Signafy's chief technology officer from 1997 to 1999, and became an ACM Fellow in 2013. His 2023 study used neural networks to forecast influenza, and his August 2025 paper examined a hybrid optical processor for optical neural networks. As of October 2026, he is a professor in the University of Copenhagen's Department of Computer Science, in Machine Learning.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1989

    Mobile robotics at Bell Labs

He earns a B.Sc. from University College London and a Ph.D. from Oxford University. He works on mobile robots at AT&T Bell Labs from 1984 to 1989.

  2. 1989–1999

    Computer vision at NEC

In 1989, he joins NEC Research Institute as a senior research scientist and creates its computer vision group. His research spans stereo and motion correspondence, image database retrieval, and digital watermarking.

  3. 1997–1999

    Chief technology officer at Signafy

From 1997 to 1999, he serves as chief technology officer of Signafy, a subsidiary of NEC responsible for commercializing watermarking.

  4. 2013

    An ACM Fellowship

In 2013, he becomes an ACM Fellow.

  5. 2023

    Neural networks forecast influenza

He coauthors a 2023 study that trains neural network models on web search activity and historical influenza-like illness rates to forecast influenza prevalence.

  6. August 2025

    A hybrid optical processor

In August 2025, he coauthors a Nature Communications paper on a hybrid optical processor for optical neural networks. Its fabricated proof-of-concept processor reaches 16-bit precision in high-definition image processing.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor in Machine Learning

As of October 2026, he is a professor in the University of Copenhagen's Department of Computer Science, in Machine Learning.
