Ian A. Walmsley
Also known as Ian Walmsley
Ian Walmsley is a quantum optics researcher whose 2025 work used machine learning to improve photon-number detection. He earned a physics degree at Imperial College and an optics PhD at Rochester, joined Oxford as a professor in 2001, and became Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research in 2009, adding Innovation in 2015. The Royal Society elected him in 2012 for his quantum and ultrafast optics contributions; his research also includes SPIDER, a method for measuring ultrashort light pulses. He served seven years as Imperial’s Provost and received a CBE in 2024 for services to science and quantum technologies. Since October 2025, he directs the Oxford Quantum Institute and researches light-based quantum information processing.
