Henry Fuchs
Henry Fuchs is a computer scientist at UNC Chapel Hill whose work spans 3D graphics, virtual reality, and computer vision. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of Utah in 1975 and joined the UNC faculty in 1978. In 1980 he co-developed the binary space partitioning tree, and during the 1980s he co-led the team behind the Pixel-Planes and PixelFlow graphics engines. The National Academy of Engineering elected him in 1997, and the ACM SIGGRAPH Steven Anson Coons Award honored him in 2015. As of October 2026, he is the Federico Gil Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UNC Chapel Hill.

1975
A Utah doctorate on 3D sensing
He earns a Ph.D. at the University of Utah in 1975, with a dissertation on the automatic sensing and analysis of 3D surface points.
-
1975–1978
Joining the UNC faculty
He works as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Dallas from 1975 to 1978, then joins the UNC Chapel Hill computer science faculty in 1978.
-
1980
The BSP tree for 3D scenes
He co-develops the binary space partitioning (BSP) tree in 1980, a novel data structure for rapidly rendering 3D scenes.
-
1980s
Pixel-Planes graphics engines
Beginning in the 1980s, he co-leads a team that designs the Pixel-Planes and PixelFlow graphics engines. These architectures lay groundwork for modern GPUs.
