Grady Booch
Known for co-developing the Unified Modeling Language, Grady Booch also spoke about AI systems in a 2018 keynote. After a bachelor's degree from the Air Force Academy in 1977, he took the chief scientist role at Rational Software, which IBM acquired in 2003. In 1992 the method he authored was published, and he co-developed UML with Ivar Jacobson and James Rumbaugh. In December 2024 a Pragmatic Engineer conversation covered software architecture and LLMs. As of October 2026, he is chief scientist for software engineering at IBM, where the focus is embodied cognition.
