Researcher

Gen Tamiya

Gen Tamiya works on statistical genetics and machine-learning analysis of biological and medical data. He directs RIKEN’s Statistical Genetics Team. The team studies genomic variation, lifestyle and health information, and prospective cohorts to investigate complex disease risk. He coauthored a 2022 AI-based support system for prognosis in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and 2024 work on polygenic prediction of type 2 diabetes. These projects connect statistical learning with specific biomedical questions. These projects aim to support personalized prevention; clinical benefit is not demonstrated.

Timeline

  1. 2019

    Statistical analysis in biobanks

Tamiya and collaborators studied detecting outliers in biobank questionnaire data. This is a specific contribution to checking and analyzing large cohort datasets.

  2. 2022

    AI-based prognosis support

Tamiya coauthored an AI-based prognosis-support system for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The study used colposcopic images.

  3. 2024

    Polygenic risk prediction

Tamiya and collaborators studied body-mass-index stratification in polygenic prediction of type 2 diabetes across biobanks.

  4. As of October 2026

    Statistical Genetics Team

Tamiya directs the Statistical Genetics Team. His research uses genomic variation, lifestyle, health status and other biological information. His research aims to support personalized and preventive medicine.
