Fred Oswald

Also known as Frederick L. Oswald

Fred Oswald is a psychologist who researches artificial intelligence in hiring. He received his PhD at the University of Minnesota in 1999, and in 2020 he served as chair of the National Academies' Board on Human-Systems Integration. In 2021 he presented a machine-learning workshop for social and behavioral scientists. In April 2022 the Commerce Department named 27 experts to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee, and by March 2024 he was a member. He is a professor at the UC Irvine School of Education, which he joined in February 2025.

    He receives his PhD at the University of Minnesota in 1999.

  2. 2020

    Chair of a National Academies board

    In 2020 he serves as chair of the National Academies' Board on Human-Systems Integration.

  3. 2021

    Machine learning for social scientists

    He presents a machine-learning workshop for social and behavioral scientists in 2021. MIT Technology Review's podcast on AI in hiring features him in July 2021 as a Rice psychology professor who does research in artificial intelligence and hiring.

  4. April 2022

    A national AI advisory committee

    The Commerce Department names 27 experts to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee in April 2022, a group that advises the president and federal agencies on AI policy.

  5. March 2024

    National AI committee member

    In March 2024 he is a psychology professor at Rice and a member of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee. He also discusses the federal AI safety consortium on Houston Public Media in March 2024.

  6. Since 2025

    Professor at UC Irvine

    After 17 years at Rice University, he joins the UC Irvine School of Education as a professor in February 2025.
