Frank Verstraete
Frank Verstraete holds the Leigh Trapnell Professorship of Quantum Physics at the University of Cambridge. He and Ignacio Cirac introduced projected entangled pair states in a 2004 preprint, a generalization of matrix product states to two and higher dimensions. He led a theoretical quantum physics group at the University of Vienna from 2006 to 2019. He won the Lieben Prize in 2009, founded the Quantum Group at Ghent University in 2012, and received the Francqui Prize in 2018. In 2020 he gave an invited talk at the First Workshop on Quantum Tensor Networks in Machine Learning.

Postdocs with Cirac and Preskill
He completes a PhD in Leuven, and from 2002 to 2004 he works with Ignacio Cirac at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. From 2004 to 2006 he is a research scholar at Caltech with John Preskill.

He and Ignacio Cirac introduce projected entangled pair states, a generalization of matrix product states to two and higher dimensions, in a 2004 preprint.

Professor at the University of Vienna
In 2006 he becomes full professor and chair of theoretical quantum nanophysics at the University of Vienna. He leads the theoretical quantum physics group there until 2019.

He receives the Lieben Prize in 2009, one of several prestigious prizes for his research.

He founds the Quantum Group at Ghent University in 2012, after moving back there with an Odysseus grant from the FWO.
