Derek Hoiem
Derek Hoiem works on scene understanding and visual learning. He also helped build Reconstruct, which applies AI to information about construction projects. Hoiem earned a robotics doctorate at Carnegie Mellon in 2007 and completed a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2008. Hoiem joined Illinois in 2009. His work includes single-view geometry, 3D scene understanding, object recognition and multitask learning. Hoiem co-founded Reconstruct and is its chief science officer. The company’s AI-based visual system gives construction participants access to project information.
