David Mumford

Also known as David Bryant Mumford

David Mumford's work moved from algebraic geometry into computer vision. He won the Fields Medal in 1974 for work on algebraic geometry. In the early 1980s he turned to computing and brain processes, and in 1989 he and Jayant Shah published the Mumford–Shah functional for image segmentation. In 2010 he received the National Medal of Science, and in 2012 he shared the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in basic science with Ingrid Daubechies. As of October 2026 he is a university professor emeritus at Brown University, where he joined the faculty in 1996.
