Daniel Scharstein
Daniel Scharstein is a computer scientist whose computer vision datasets at Middlebury College let researchers measure their methods on shared data. He moved from Germany to the United States in 1990 for a Cornell PhD, which he completed in 1997. A 2002 taxonomy of dense two-frame stereo methods, written with Richard Szeliski, appeared in the International Journal of Computer Vision. He received the Mark Everingham Prize in Santiago, Chile, in December 2015, sharing it with Richard Szeliski. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus of computer science at Middlebury College.

Timeline
-
1990–1997
A Cornell doctorate
He moves from Germany to the United States in 1990 to join Cornell's computer science PhD program. He completes the doctorate in 1997 with a dissertation titled View Synthesis using Stereo Vision.
-
2001
Stereo datasets with ground truth
In 2001 he and two colleagues create stereo datasets of piecewise planar scenes with ground-truth disparity maps. The site he develops with Richard Szeliski is a repository for computer vision evaluations and datasets.
-
2002
A taxonomy of stereo methods
In 2002 he and Richard Szeliski publish a taxonomy and evaluation of dense two-frame stereo correspondence algorithms in the International Journal of Computer Vision. The paper also presents a stand-alone C++ implementation that enables the evaluation of individual components.
-
2015
The Mark Everingham Prize
He receives the Mark Everingham Prize in Santiago, Chile, in December 2015, and he shares it with Richard Szeliski. The datasets let researchers measure their methods on the same standard data.
-
August 2017
A sixth NSF grant
In August 2017 he gains his sixth National Science Foundation grant, for new datasets and algorithms that enable 3D reconstruction with mobile phones. The grant supports at least seven undergraduate students.
-
As of October 2026
Emeritus at Middlebury
He holds the title Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Middlebury College.
