Christopher Ré

Also known as Christopher Re, Christopher M. Re, Christophe Re, Chris Re

Christopher Ré is a Stanford computer scientist whose AI work spans data systems, sequence models, and efficient model training. His route runs from study at Cornell and Washington through a faculty post in Wisconsin to Stanford. DeepDive extends machine-learning analysis to data beyond traditional databases, and a 2015 MacArthur Fellowship recognizes his big-data work. Hogwild! earns the NeurIPS Test of Time Award in 2020. At ICLR and ICML in 2022, his S4 and Monarch papers receive an Honorable Mention and an Outstanding Paper Runner Up award.

Timeline

  1. 2001–2009

    Training in computer science

At Cornell, he earns a B.S. in 2001; at the University of Washington, he completes a Ph.D. in 2009.

  2. 2009–2013

    A Wisconsin faculty post

From 2009 to 2013, he serves as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

  3. By 2015

    A system for dark data

He creates DeepDive, an inference engine that analyzes data beyond the capabilities of traditional databases.

  4. 2015

    A MacArthur fellowship

The MacArthur Foundation names him a Fellow for work on big-data analytics, statistics, logic, and practical data-processing applications.

  5. 2020

    Parallelizing model training

With Feng Niu, Benjamin Recht, and Stephen Wright, he develops Hogwild!, a lock-free way to run stochastic gradient descent in parallel. The paper wins the 2020 NeurIPS Test of Time Award.

  6. 2022

    Modeling long sequences

With Albert Gu and Karan Goel, he develops S4, a structured state-space model for long sequences. The paper receives an ICLR 2022 Honorable Mention.

  7. 2022

    Structured matrices for training

He coauthors Monarch, which represents weight matrices as products of two block-diagonal matrices for expressive, hardware-efficient training. ICML names the paper an Outstanding Paper Runner Up in 2022.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research at Stanford

At Stanford, he is a professor of computer science. He works in the Stanford AI Lab and is affiliated with the Machine Learning Group and the Center for Research on Foundation Models.
