Chris Holmes
Chris Holmes is an Oxford biostatistician with work in Bayesian statistics, pattern recognition, statistical genomics and AI for health. Before he moved to Oxford in 2004, he studied Bayesian statistics at Imperial and worked in industry on real-time pattern recognition. He co-authored QuantiSNP, an objective Bayesian hidden Markov model for copy-number detection, and CONSORT-AI, a reporting guideline for AI clinical trials. In 2025, he became a co-director of EIT's Artificial Intelligence Platform. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Biostatistics at Oxford and Visiting Faculty at EIT, serving on its Scientific Management Committee; he is also an ELLIS Program Director and Fellow in Robust Machine Learning.

Timeline
-
By 2004
From Imperial to Oxford
Before he moves to Oxford from Imperial College in February 2004, he studies Bayesian statistics for his doctorate and holds a postdoctoral position and a lectureship at Imperial. Earlier, he works in industry on real-time pattern recognition for defence and SCADA systems.
-
2007
QuantiSNP and copy-number variation
In 2007, Holmes co-authors QuantiSNP, an objective Bayesian hidden Markov model for detecting and mapping copy-number variation from SNP genotyping data.
-
2020
Reporting guidance for AI trials
In 2020, he co-authors the CONSORT-AI extension, a reporting guideline for clinical trial reports involving AI interventions.
-
February 2025
Co-leading EIT's AI platform
In February 2025, EIT names Holmes and Cecilia Lindgren as co-directors of its Artificial Intelligence Platform; their remit includes applied machine learning and fundamental frontier AI science research.
-
As of October 2026
Oxford professor and EIT visitor
As of October 2026, he is Professor of Biostatistics at Oxford and Visiting Faculty at EIT, serving on its Scientific Management Committee after leading AIR from its inception. He is also an ELLIS Program Director and Fellow in Robust Machine Learning.
