Researcher

Carme Torras

Carme Torras studies robot learning and assistive manipulation. Her work also uses fiction and teaching to examine social questions about robots. Torras studied mathematics in Barcelona and computer science at Massachusetts, then completed doctoral work on neural adaptation at UPC. She applied that work to robot motion planning and manipulation. The English edition of The Vestigial Heart came with teaching materials on ethics in social robotics and AI. MIT Press published the English edition in 2018. Torras coauthored A Grasping-centered Analysis for Cloth Manipulation with Júlia Borràs and Guillem Alenyà. The paper presents a framework for describing textile grasps and manipulation primitives, with a 2019 preprint and 2020 revision.
