Carlo Tomasi
Carlo Tomasi is a computer-vision researcher whose work connects image streams, motion, and shape. With Takeo Kanade, he developed a factorization method for recovering scene shape and camera motion; he later co-authored bilateral filtering, a method that smooths images while preserving edges. He chaired Duke's computer science department and received an IEEE Computer Society Helmholtz Prize in 2013; he became an ACM Fellow in 2016 for contributions to computer vision. In 2025, he co-authored Pose Splatter, a 3D Gaussian splatting model for quantifying animal pose and appearance. He is the Iris Einheuser Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Duke.

Timeline
-
1991–1992
A doctorate in computer vision
He completes a PhD in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in the 1991–1992 academic year, with Takeo Kanade advising his thesis, Shape and Motion from Image Streams: A Factorization Method.
-
1993
Factoring shape from motion
In 1993, he and Takeo Kanade publish a factorization method for inferring scene geometry and camera motion from image streams.
-
1997–1998
A seminar and an image filter
In 1997, he is one of the advisers for a seminar on graphics, geometry, vision, robotics, and numerical methods. In 1998, he and Roberto Manduchi publish a bilateral filter that smooths images while preserving edges.
-
2013
Chairing Duke computer science
In 2013, he chairs Duke's computer science department and argues that the growing importance of big data increases demand for a joint master's degree in economics and computation.
-
2013
An IEEE Helmholtz Prize
He wins a Helmholtz Prize from the IEEE Computer Society in 2013.
-
2016
An ACM Fellowship
He becomes an ACM Fellow in 2016 for contributions to computer vision.
-
2025
Modeling animal pose in 3D
In 2025, he co-authors Pose Splatter, a 3D Gaussian splatting model for quantifying animal pose and appearance.
-
Since 2016
Professor at Duke
He is the Iris Einheuser Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Duke, a role he has held since 2016.
