Benjamin Chess
Also known as Ben Chess
Benjamin Chess is an AI infrastructure engineer whose work spans large language models and the systems that support AI workloads. He co-authored the GPT-3 few-shot study, which received a 2020 NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award, and papers on model scaling, browser-assisted question answering, and GPT-4. At Atero, he helped build software for GPU management and memory optimization in AI inference. Since 2025, he is part of Crusoe’s engineering organization after Crusoe acquired Atero.

Timeline
-
2020
A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper
He co-authors ‘Language Models are Few-Shot Learners,’ which studies GPT-3’s few-shot performance. NeurIPS names the paper an Outstanding Paper in 2020.
-
2020
Scaling language models
In 2020, he co-authors ‘Scaling Laws for Neural Language Models,’ which reports power-law relations between model loss, model size, dataset size, and training compute.
-
2021
WebGPT and human feedback
In 2021, he co-authors WebGPT, which fine-tunes GPT-3 to answer long-form questions in a text-based web-browsing environment and optimizes answer quality with human feedback.
-
2023
GPT-4 technical report
He co-authors OpenAI’s GPT-4 Technical Report, submitted in March 2023, which describes a multimodal model that accepts image and text inputs.
-
2024
Co-founding Atero
He co-founds Atero with Alon Yariv, Omer Landau, and Eyal Salomon in 2024. The company builds software to coordinate AI workloads and optimize GPU memory for large-scale inference.
-
Since 2025
Crusoe infrastructure engineering
In August 2025, he joins Crusoe’s engineering organization with Atero’s team after Crusoe acquires the company.
