Asunción Gómez Pérez

Also known as Asunción Gómez-Pérez, Asuncion Gomez Perez

Asunción Gómez Pérez is a full professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), and her research centers on ontological engineering, the semantic web and linked data. She earned her doctorate at UPM in 1993, and in 1994 she was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University's Knowledge Systems Laboratory. She wrote the textbook Ingeniería ontológica in 2003 and received the Aritmel National Prize for Computer Science in 2015. She served as vice-rector for research, innovation and doctoral studies at UPM from 2016 to 2024, and she holds seat q in the Real Academia Española, which she took up in 2023. As of October 2026, she sits on the European Commission's Scientific Panel for the AI Act.

  1. 1967–1993

    A doctorate at UPM

    She is born in Azuaga, Spain, in 1967 and earns a doctorate in computer science at UPM in 1993.

  2. 1994–1995

    Stanford and the ontology group

    In 1994 she is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University's Knowledge Systems Laboratory, working with Tom Gruber. From 1995 she directs the Ontology Engineering Group at UPM.

  3. 2003–2004

    The Ingeniería ontológica textbook

    She writes Ingeniería ontológica in 2003, and the book is selected as the best textbook at UPM in 2004.

  4. 2015

    Aritmel and Ada Byron prizes

    In 2015 she receives the Aritmel National Prize for Computer Science, which recognizes her work on ontological engineering, the semantic web and linked data. The national Ada Byron prize for women technologists also honors her in 2015.

  5. 2016–2024

    Vice-rector for research

    She serves as vice-rector for research, innovation and doctoral studies at UPM from 2016 to 2024.

  6. 2022–2024

    Seats in two Spanish academies

    The Real Academia Española elects her to seat q in April 2022, and she takes the seat in 2023. She joins the Real Academia de Ingeniería in 2024.

  7. 2026

    Premio Gigante de Extremadura

    She receives the Premio Gigante de Extremadura in 2026.

  8. As of October 2026

    Full professor at UPM

    She is a full professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at UPM, a post she has held since 2007. She also sits on the European Commission's Scientific Panel for the AI Act.
