Arindam Banerjee

Arindam Banerjee is a computer scientist who applies statistical machine learning to climate science and ecology. He completed a PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. Clustering with Bregman Divergences, a 2005 paper he co-wrote with Srujana Merugu, Inderjit Dhillon, and Joydeep Ghosh, generalized k-means to a large class of loss functions. The ACM named him a 2024 Fellow for contributions to advances in statistical machine learning and its applications in science. As of October 2026, he is a computer science professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who holds a Founder Professorship.
