Antoni Buades

Also known as Antonio Buades

Antoni Buades is a mathematician who works in computer vision and artificial intelligence, with a research record in image denoising. He studied mathematics at the University of the Balearic Islands and coauthored non-local means, a method that reduces noise by averaging similar pixels across an image. His later work covered movie denoising, image fusion for painting photographs, and RAW-video noise removal. His 2005 paper received the 2015 CVPR Longuet-Higgins Prize. Since 2022, he has been a full professor of applied mathematics at the University of the Balearic Islands.

    Studying mathematics at UIB

    Born in Búger in 1979, he earns a mathematics degree in 2001 and a doctorate in 2006 at the University of the Balearic Islands.

  2. 2005

    Non-local means for image denoising

    At CVPR in 2005, he coauthors non-local means with Bartomeu Coll and Jean-Michel Morel, a denoising algorithm based on nonlocal averaging across the image.

  3. 2008

    Denoising images and movies

    With Bartomeu Coll and Jean-Michel Morel, he publishes “Image and movie denoising by nonlocal means” in the International Journal of Computer Vision in 2008.

  4. 2011

    Two implementations of non-local means

    In 2011, his Image Processing On Line paper presents two implementations of non-local means and displays denoising results.

  5. 2012

    Fusing photographs of paintings

    With Gloria Haro and Jean-Michel Morel, he publishes a 2012 method for producing quality photographs of paintings through multi-image fusion.

  6. 2015

    A Longuet-Higgins Prize

    His 2005 paper with Bartomeu Coll and Jean-Michel Morel wins the 2015 CVPR Longuet-Higgins Prize.

  7. 2026–2027

    Full professor of applied mathematics

    During the 2026–27 academic year, he teaches mathematics at UIB as a full professor of applied mathematics, a position he has held since 2022. His research covers digital image processing, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and image and video restoration. In 2026, he publishes a paper on pre- and post-demosaicking noise removal for RAW video in IEEE Transactions on Image Processing.
