Andrey Kolmogorov
Also known as Андрей Николаевич Колмогоров, Andrey Nikolaevich Kolmogorov
Andrey Kolmogorov was a mathematician whose 1933 book gave probability theory its modern axiomatic foundations. In 1929 he earned his doctorate at Moscow State University, and in 1963 he first published on the subject that carries his name, Kolmogorov complexity. In 1957 he and his student Vladimir Arnold solved a particular interpretation of Hilbert's thirteenth problem, and machine learning has since seen various attempts at neural networks modeled on that result. He shared the 1980 Wolf Prize in Mathematics with Henri Cartan. He died in Moscow in 1987.
Timeline
-
1929
Doctorate at Moscow State University
He earns his doctorate at Moscow State University in 1929.
-
1933
Probability built on axioms
The mathematician publishes Foundations of the Theory of Probability in 1933, laying the modern axiomatic foundations of probability theory.
-
1938
Smoothing and prediction theorems
In a 1938 paper, he establishes the basic theorems for smoothing and predicting stationary stochastic processes.
-
1957
The Kolmogorov–Arnold theorem
In 1957, working with his student Vladimir Arnold, he solves a particular interpretation of Hilbert's thirteenth problem. In the field of machine learning, there are various attempts to use neural networks modeled on this result.
-
1963
Kolmogorov complexity
He first publishes on the subject in 1963, and the measure is named after him.
-
1980
A Wolf Prize in Mathematics
He shares the 1980 Wolf Prize in Mathematics with Henri Cartan.
-
1987
Death in Moscow
He dies in Moscow in 1987, and he is buried at Novodevichy cemetery.
