Amir H. Gandomi
Also known as Amir Hossein Gandomi
Amir Gandomi is a data science professor whose AI work spans evolutionary optimization, genetic programming, and deep learning. He and a coauthor introduced the Krill Herd algorithm in 2012, and a 2021 Australian Research Council award supported his genetic-programming work. In 2024, he was corresponding author of a deep-learning system for COVID-19 diagnosis from chest X-rays; his team received a 2026 journal award for flood forecasting. He received the 2022 Huber Award and the 2025 Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Data Science at the University of Technology Sydney and Distinguished Professor at Óbuda University.

Timeline
-
2011–2021
Krill Herd and genetic programming
In 2011, he moves to the United States to continue structural-engineering studies; his civil-engineering PhD is from the University of Akron, and he earns an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at Michigan State's BEACON Center. In 2012, he and Amir H. Alavi introduce the Krill Herd algorithm for engineering optimization; by 2019, he is Professor of Data Science at UTS after an assistant professorship at Stevens Institute of Technology. In 2021, he uses a $400,000 Australian Research Council DECRA award to develop genetic programming with information theory and Alpha programs that track information genes.
-
2022
A civil engineering award
He receives the 2022 Walter L. Huber Award, which recognizes mid-career research in civil engineering.
-
2024
A deep-learning COVID-19 tool
In 2024, he is the corresponding author of a deep-learning system that identifies COVID-19, normal cases, and pneumonia in chest X-rays with more than 98% accuracy.
-
2025
Sigma Xi's Young Investigator Award
Sigma Xi gives him its 2025 Young Investigator Award for applying data-driven AI to public health, sustainability, and smart cities.
-
October 2026
A flood forecasting paper award
In October 2026, his team receives the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering Best Research Paper Award for an attention-based deep-learning approach to long-term flood forecasting.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at UTS and Óbuda
As of October 2026, he is Professor of Data Science at the University of Technology Sydney and Distinguished Professor at Óbuda University.
