Alfred Marcel Bruckstein
Also known as Alfred M. Bruckstein, Alfred Bruckstein
Alfred Marcel Bruckstein is a researcher in sparse signal representations, computer vision, and multi-agent robotics. He earned electrical engineering degrees at the Technion and Stanford before joining the Technion faculty in 1984. He worked at Bell Laboratories on sabbatical from the Technion and later led its graduate school and Excellence Program. With Michal Aharon and Michael Elad, he coauthored K-SVD, an algorithm for adapting dictionaries to produce sparse signal representations. He shared the 2014 SIAG/Imaging Science Prize, became an IEEE Fellow in 2023 for contributions to signal representation and swarm robotics, and is a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University as of October 2026.

Timeline
-
1976–1988
Technion and Stanford degrees
He earns B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the Technion in 1976 and 1981, then completes an electrical engineering Ph.D. at Stanford in 1984. In October 1984, he joins the Technion's electrical engineering department as a lecturer. He becomes a tenured senior lecturer in December 1987.
-
1995–1997
A Bell Laboratories sabbatical
From April 1995 to September 1997, he works at Bell Laboratories as a member of technical staff while on sabbatical from the Technion.
-
2002–2006
Dean of the Technion Graduate School
From October 2002 to January 2006, he serves as dean of the Technion Graduate School.
-
2006
The K-SVD algorithm
With Michal Aharon and Michael Elad, he publishes K-SVD in 2006. The algorithm adapts overcomplete dictionaries to produce sparse signal representations.
-
2007–2012
Head of the Excellence Program
From January 2007 to January 2012, he heads the Technion's Excellence Program.
-
2014
The SIAG/Imaging Science Prize
He shares the 2014 SIAG/Imaging Science Prize with David Donoho and Michael Elad for work on sparse modeling of signals and images.
-
2023
IEEE Fellow
IEEE names him a Fellow in 2023 for contributions to signal representation and swarm robotics.
-
As of October 2026
Visiting professor at NTU
As of October 2026, he is a visiting professor in NTU's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. His research interests include distributed multi-agent robotics, image analysis, and image and signal processing.
