Aggelos K Katsaggelos is an electrical engineer whose image and video processing research has reached AI for medical and astronomical data. He earned a diploma in Thessaloniki in 1979, then MS and PhD degrees at Georgia Tech in 1981 and 1985. IEEE named him a Fellow in 1998, and the Signal Processing Society gave him its Technical Achievement Award in 2010. In 2020 he helped create DeepCOVID-XR, an AI program that spots COVID-19 in lung X-rays. As of October 2026, he is the Joseph Cummings Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University and directs the Image and Video Processing Lab.

  1. 1979–1985

    Degrees, then a Northwestern post

    He earns a diploma in Thessaloniki in 1979 and MS and PhD degrees at Georgia Tech in 1981 and 1985. He joins Northwestern University in 1985.

  2. 1998

    IEEE Fellow for image restoration

    He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 1998 for contributions to the theory and application of iterative image restoration methods.

  3. 2010

    A Technical Achievement Award

    He receives the 2010 IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award for contributions to the fields of image and video processing.

  4. 2016–2020

    Machine Learning Refined

    He co-authors Machine Learning Refined, a Cambridge University Press book dated 2016 and 2020.

  5. 2017–2018

    EURASIP and Optica fellowships

    EURASIP names him a Fellow in 2017 for contributions to image and video processing. Optica names him a Fellow in 2018 for contributions to digital image and video processing.

  6. 2020–2021

    DeepCOVID-XR for lung X-rays

    He helps create DeepCOVID-XR, an AI program that spots COVID-19 in lung X-rays, and its team trains and tests it on 17,000 X-rays in 2020. The team's paper appears in Radiology in 2021.

  7. 2024–2025

    Deputy director of SkAI

    He serves as deputy director of SkAI, an astronomy and AI institute that the team establishes in October 2024 with a $20 million grant.

  8. As of October 2026

    Joseph Cummings Professor

    He is the Joseph Cummings Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University and directs the Image and Video Processing Lab.
