Abbas Mehrabian
Abbas Mehrabian is an artificial-intelligence researcher in the computer science team at Google DeepMind, and his work focuses on using AI to advance mathematics. He earned a BSc at Sharif University before moving to Canada in 2009, and he completed a PhD in Combinatorics and Optimization at Waterloo in 2015. A paper he co-wrote on learning mixtures of Gaussians won a NeurIPS 2018 Best Paper Award, and from 2015 to 2021 he studied theoretical aspects of machine learning. He also helps develop AlphaEvolve, a coding agent for designing advanced algorithms. He received the Sportsnet Diploma Scholarship in Journalism in 2021, and the University of Waterloo gave him a Governor General's Gold Medal in 2015.
