Researcher

Aapo Hyvärinen

Aapo Hyvärinen is a computer science professor whose research applies machine learning to neuroscience. He studied mathematics in Helsinki, Vienna, and Paris, earned a 1997 doctorate, and published a FastICA paper in 1999. He published a 2001 book on independent component analysis and held professorships in Helsinki and at UCL’s Gatsby Unit. He joined the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2016 and wrote Painful Intelligence about using AI to understand human suffering. By 2025, he was a founding ELLIS Fellow and had proposed a noise-corrected Langevin method; as of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science (Machine Learning) at the University of Helsinki.

Timeline

  1. 1997–1999

    Mathematics and FastICA

He earns a PhD in Information Science at Helsinki University of Technology in 1997 after studying undergraduate mathematics in Helsinki, Vienna, and Paris. His FastICA research includes a 1999 article on fast and robust fixed-point algorithms for independent component analysis.

  2. 2001

    An ICA textbook

In 2001, he publishes Independent Component Analysis, a book that introduces ICA and covers algorithms and applications in brain imaging and telecommunications.

  3. 2003–2013

    Professorships in Helsinki

He moves to the University of Helsinki in 2003, becomes Professor of Computational Data Analysis in 2008, and Professor of Computer Science in 2013.

  4. 2016

    Finnish Academy membership

He joins the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2016.

  5. 2016–2019

    Professor at Gatsby

He serves as Professor of Machine Learning at UCL’s Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit from 2016 to 2019 while on leave from Helsinki.

  6. 2022

    AI and human suffering

In 2022, he publishes Painful Intelligence, which uses modern AI theory to understand human suffering.

  7. By 2025

    A founding ELLIS Fellow

By 2025, he is a founding Fellow of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems and co-leads its Robust Machine Learning programme. His 2025 article proposes a noise-corrected Langevin algorithm that removes bias from noisy data, at least regarding first-order terms.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Helsinki

As of October 2026, he is Professor of Computer Science (Machine Learning) at the University of Helsinki. His work focuses on machine learning and its applications to neuroscience.
